Good place to sell an expensive laptop?

Happy Christmas MSE folks, I hope I'm in the right forum.

I got a laptop for Christmas (got it a couple of weeks early actually). It's an HP Omen gaming laptop, 17", huge and heavy. It's got a GTX 1070 in, and cost £1,899
It's this one http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=Y3W52EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

I don't want it, but I do desperately want the money I can get for it. It was shipped to me direct from HP. For various reasons I can't return it to HP for a refund.

Does anyone know a good place to sell it? There's obviously eBay, but they keep your money for a couple of weeks, there's a risk of being scammed/the buyer not liking it and sending it back, and it's heavy to ship.

I could take it to a 'cash converter' type place, but they'll most likely scalp me and I live in a town where not many people are going to buy a 2 grand laptop.
I'm not ruling it out, I've just not used them before, and I can imagine them not really appreciating what it is and offering me 200 quid for it.

tldr; anyone know a good place to sell an expensive laptop? It's two weeks old and basically new - just taken out of the box and played with for an hour or two.

  • i think you've answered your own question. maybe put it on ebay cash on collection on a buy it now. but coc limits your target potential because only people local to you would be interested.

when looking for bargains i tend to look through coc ebay ads as they tend to be underbid due to geographical limitations.

Thanks seatbeltnoob, didn't know about COC. :T

While I'm here, any suggestions what a fair price Buy It Now price would be?
  • £1,250 if it's as new.

The problem is if you are new to EBay, will anyone hand over that amount of cash to a first time seller?

  • Cheers for all the answers. I'm not a new seller, and I've sold £500+ smartphones before. I've got all the receipts and it's got 11 months of a 12 month warranty. If I was buying it I'd get gadget insurance.

I wish I knew someone who would buy me a nearly £2K laptop without checking what actually I wanted...

Something odd about this - who knows somebody wealthy enough to buy them a preseent costing nearly £2000 but is so strapped for cash they have to get rid of it in a hurry?

I tend to agree. What reasons are there for not trying to return it to HP? Can you not get the person who gave it to you to return it? Have you been using it during the period you've "owned" it?
  • I think HP will refund the card it was paid from. So if the opp wants the money they need to sell it themselves.
Try local Facebook selling group, cash on collection.

Honestly there's nothing fishy, just wanted to spare you the details. My aunt bought it for me, she's on her last legs, I'm at Uni and she wanted to do something nice for me. I thought I wanted it, I'm studying IT, I needed the power and the portability, just didn't realise how huge and heavy it would be - the power supply is the about the same size as a small laptop. It was bought on my paypal but her credit card. HP said if they refund it would go back to her credit card, it's complicated, she's in hospital, I didn't want to offend her, sat on it for a few weeks while I decided what to do, now it's too late to return anyway. (purchase date was the 22nd Nov)

It's all bought and paid for, as I say it's in my name and address and it was ordered direct from HP. I have no trouble proving ownership. It's been used for about four hours, then factory resetted and put back in its box.

I didn't give all the details in my original post as they did not seem relevant. All I wanted was some suggestion on how to get a fair price for it without *me* being ripped off. I just want to sell it, get a decent laptop for £500ish, and use the cash for something else.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I have what I need. :-) Happy Christmas.
