    Wow. A lot of responses.

Thanks to all for the help. A lot of posts (sorry I've been away from the internet for a little while, but certainly appreciate the advice while I was away.)

For clarification, when I say "I contacted Starbucks" it was actually the manager of store in question that I initially spoke to. They were very helpful, and nice, though they were not in store when I paid for the top-up.

I did the usual "here is the time and amount thing", no mention of theft by the member of staff, and asked them to check the log. Took them a little while, but got back to me a few days later, saying that there is "no record of the transaction". They suggested speaking to Customer Services, who could potentially look into the card itself (apparently they can't do that in store) who gave me the same answer. No record of a £10 top up to any card at the time, and no record of any swipe of the card until a few days later in the Chester store. CS claim to have checked both the gift card system, and the master ledger in store, and neither show any transaction of that kind, at that time.

I'll write back to CS, and see what they offer, but not holding my breath at this point, may just need to write it off.

Could they not check to see if the till was £10 up that day or thereabouts?

When I used to work in retail you'd get the odd customer thinking they paid with a £20 instead of a £10 and yes genuinely sometimes it was the cashiers mistake for putting it through as a £10 and sometimes of course it's the customers for thinking it might have been (or being deceptive).

General protocol was the customer wouldn't have much choice but to wait until the till could be cashed up in the evening or in very rare circumstances cashed up right away and reconciled.

If it was £10 up then the chances are, they were telling the truth.

Of course these days there is usually CCTV looming over cashiers too, is that not also an option?

The till would show as balanced if the staff member did indeed pocket the note though, which may not help the OP.
