Why am I getting insane quotes on my new car?

I'm getting a new car in a few days. Same model as the current 2 year old one, in fact (it was a sweet PCP deal for 2 years). Last couple of years I've been paying £300/year.

I did a few dummy quotes using fake details and a VPN to mask my real IP address, and got quotes in excess of £600 as the lowest offer!

Nothing has changed other than it's a new car, but the last one was new when I paid £300 a couple of years ago!

Have insurance prices really doubled in the last two years? Am I just being fleeced?

Using fake details which don't cross check when they so a credit search to confirm identity and/or a VPN will mean lots of Insurers will not be quoting.

Requesting a quote for the current day can also result in higher quotes tham if you request it for a date a couple of weeks in the future
  • Thanks dacouch. I'm picking it up next week but only just found out the registration (obviously didn't use that in the dummy quotes). Maybe I'll try again with real details tomorrow.

I'll try without the VPN as well, obviously these days it is needed all the time but you have to make exceptions for stuff like this.

Using a VPN but the same computer?

  • Incognito mode, natch. I switch VPN endpoints too.
  • Called them in the end, got a more reasonable quote (£10 for the remaining 100 days on the policy with the new car).
