PPI Reclaim if you do not know the company (!)

Options
I recall that when I was a student 20 years ago I had a credit card. I am sure that I was sold PPI but I cannot recall which company it was with.

Short of writing to every bank in the country, is there a way I can find out. It's so long ago it is not on my credit report (!). I have chucked out old statements from that time period.

Basically no it would be entirely down to your memory. If you even remember, the fact it was so long ago and your lack of documents would prevent a case ever getting off the ground as you could never prove you paid PPI and the company will most likely have deleted the records if you closed it more than 6 years ago

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
