Another resolution question

Hi

When I run my laptop to my TV and select 1600x900 I cannot see the very bottom or very left hand side. Its like its being cropped. However 1600x900 on the laptop screen itself is fine. Anybody know why this is?

If your TV is an HD panel, 1280x720p is the best it can do.

If it's Full HD you need to set it to auto adjust and remove the overscan or set your laptop to use the resolution of 1920x1080 to match the panel.

As above, check your TV settings - on a Samsung TV it's usually with the picture size options so you cycle through auto->4:3->16:9->Zoom->Just Scan (or something like that).

Just how much is being cropped? Whether you TV is 1080p or 720p it will display in a full widescreen ratio, eg 16:9, which is the same as your laptop, assuming it really is a 1600x900 display. However, usually be default, your TV will possibly be set to overscan and therefore cropping the picture. You need to look for a setting to display a full screen without overscan so that you get full 1 to 1 pixel mapping.

Update: I've just read that on some Samsung TVs there isn't an overscan option, what you have to do is change the the HDMI input name to PC or PC/DVI. I believe if you select Tools on your remote there will be a setting to change the name of the input. There might also be a PC mode somewhere.

Wrong refresh rate can change the screen position.

I have a media PC tower with windows on it. When i set it to 1920x1080 the 4 corners extend slightly beyond the visible area. Only part of the red X top right is visible and only part of the start button bottom left is visible.

Change the refresh rate to 72hz and it all becomes visible. Any other figure below or above loses part of the screen.

Have a play with your refresh rate.
