Hi
My wife and I are planning to go on our first trip to New York in July 2017. We are planning to spend about 4-5 days in New York and would then we would like to head off to the beach for a few days to relax and chill out after the hectic time in New York. We would like to travel by train or public transport and hopefully travel no longer than 90 minutes or so.
Any suggestions for areas to go to and possible hotels?
Thanks.

you could take the subway to Coney Island or a NJ transit bus (and maybe a train) to beaches on the Jersey Shore (eg Altantic city) within a couple of hours. These beaches aren't really anything special though (imagine say Blackpool but even less charming).
There's plenty of flights from NYC down to Florida, and if you fly out of Florida then your travel time is probably not much more than making a return trip from NYC to a more local beach but the location would be much better quality. Pricing up UK-NYC, NYC-Florida, Florida- Uk will probably be cheapest, but also worth checking uk-NYC, Florida-uk and a separate domestic flight (of which there's plenty to choose).
Cant recommend any hotels myself, but trip advisor (reviews and forums) are where I do my research.Save £12k in 2019 #360 -
Head a little north to cape cod or Martha's Vinyeard, wonderful that time of the year."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

Google Maps shows loads of beaches within easy reach of New York City.
I've no idea if they are any good or not, but it's a start.0 -
Fire Island is nice for a visit - but can be complicated to get to.
If it is a few days at the beach you are after I would second going south. I would recommend Virginia Beach or Myrtle Beach. Florida is, well, Florida - maybe not as nice (IMO) but easier and cheaper to get to.
If you want to think out of the box - there is always the Bahamas - easy and convenient (and cheap) flights form NY.0 -
coney island beach is quite nice big and very sandy but was busy when i was there in august so think it probably would be busy all throughout the summer and easy to get on the subway from manhattan0

The beaches on the gulf coast of Florida, particularly on the barrier islands (Captiva/sanibel etc) are fabulous and the vibe is very Caribbean. Lots of airports to fly out of too.0
