Meaning of "Interest is not paid on balances over £5,000"?

I did simple maths at school MANY years ago
and would never asked the 1st question .
Maths isn't the problem as I hold a BSc in that from university in the 70's. Now English language is a different matter as I only have a GCE in that.:)
One of the statements TrustyOven posted - "Additional interest is not paid on balances over £5,000." - would appear to clarify the situation for the sake of just one extra word.0 -
How about:
"Only the first £5,000 earns interest"0
