Please help me choose between these printers

I am looking for advice re printers, please.
I thought it would be easy to just nip into Currys and buy a printer for my OH.But then I got comparing online icon_rolleyes.gif.
Mostly it wolud be used for B+W printing, occasional colour, and he would love to be able to print photos straight from his ipad.He used to have a seperate scanner, but it died,so built in scanner would also be great.
After a few hour googling/comparing last night,I found the 3 I will link to below.
Can I get advice as to whether these are good for what I am looking for,or whether there is better around. At this late stage,I would love to just walk into ,say,Currys/large supermarket/maybe Argos, and say "can I buy (this) printer, please"
Any advice would really be appreciated, thanks.

The site to which you linked is a USA site (priced in dollars) so unless you are in US you will not want to buy them. I always prefer Epson just through long time use. I have just replaced my PX-810FW with an XP-860 and so far totally satisfied. Slightly higher spec than the XP-630 but you can buy the XP-630 at Argos for £90.00. I like the individual ink cartridges and the duplex printing, dual trays A4 plus photo, print from Wi-Fi and from memory cards.

I've got the HP5540 (actually its a badged version from John Lewis marked as a 5544). When I looked at different models in the price range of that, the HP seemed to come up with best value. I've be had it about 6 months, it's OK and for the use you specify it would be absoluely fine. I print direct from tablets to it over wifi as well as via USB from my computer.

I did find the John Lewis website very good on price, warranty and choice so worth checking out.

I did previously have a Canon multifunction printer but had to dump that when the print heads failed due to a software bug so I wasn't inclined to give them any more money. But the Canon scanning software was immeasurably superior to the basic HP stuff.

There's nothing wrong with the HP scanner, its does the job, it's just that some of the capabilities built into the Canon software were superb. Things like rescuing old failed prints, removing dust, adjusting the gutter in a book scan, and so on. iI that's important to your OH check out some Canon printer / scanners as well.

I had Epson printers years back, for reasons that escape me now, I gave up on them. Maybe they've gotten better.

yes wouldn't recommend canon had two packed up after 11 months light usage with software bugs

A mate has had an Epsom for ages with no probs.
  • I am a very infrequent printer and I was sick of throwing out cartridges that had become blocked (that was on a couple of different Canons).

I currently have had an HP Envy 5532 for a couple of years now and it just seems to work for me - the heads have never blocked up (I only print about 10-20 pages per month). The cartridges (original) aren't too expensive or you can pay a monthly fee to get cartridges delivered to your door. The downside is that the standard cartridges don't last long (although XL ones are available) and I think the photo printing from my old Canon was slightly better.

Be careful if you want to print photos. Some printers do not work with normal photo paper. Our Epson XP 312 will only work with thin card!
