Screen resolution question

My laptop is 1600x900 at best and 17inch screen.

If I got a 21inch monitor with 1920x1080, would I actually get this resolution? or would my laptop restrict it to 1600x900?

  • It's difficult to say without knowing the model number of your laptop. However, if it was built in the last 5 years, it will almost certainly support 1920x1080, which is a very widely used resolution. Do you have access to an HD television that you could connect the laptop to as a test?
  • my daughters laptop does the first one..
she plugs her 1366x768 laptop into her TV via HDMI, and only gets the same resolution as her laptop screen, even though its a 1080p tv....
  • In my last two jobs I used a laptop with an external monitor and both times I was able to get a higher resolution which was limited by the monitor and not the laptop.

You will be able to use 1920x1080 on the external screen.

It'll largely depend on the capabilities of the onboard graphics. I reckon if your daughter were to look in to it she may well be able to increase the resolution to 1080p.

It may be the laptop is simply mirroring the main display which will restrict the resolution, if you set the TV as the only display (usually by pressing FN and of the top row buttons marked as a monitor or similar) or an extended display then it should be able to run at 1080p.

  • Oh I didnt even think of that. Now running it on the TV at1920x1080, from the sofa as well.

    Should have thought of that.

Thanks for saving me £100 on a new screen.
