Carpet Underlay

Hi,

I've just recently got the keys to my first home and trying reduce the amount I've saved in making my own mark on the property.

I need some carpet soon for a room that is approximately 12m². To save costs I'm thinking of getting underlay on eBay and fitting that myself as it'll only need to stick to the floor. I can get 15m² online between £30 and £60 whereas a retailer such as Carpetright will charge around £150 then fitting as well.

Has anyone else done this and have they had any problems with underlay purchased online?

Thanks.

I did think about it, then I went and got a quote from a smaller more independent reseller for underlay with carpet and was much better..... Carpetright (and other larger retailers) are very expensive!

Just buy the online stuff. Easy as pie. You can ask a carpet fitter to fit it for you while he's doing the carpet, it will barely make a difference to the price.

I bought some Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm from a local discount store (near enough the same price as online) along with the carpet (cheaper than anywhere online). I put down brown lining paper to help with draughts and dust and then just got my carpet fitter to fit the underlay at the same time as the carpet.

Cheap isn't always best with underlay. A good underlay will help protect the carpet and make it last longer.

    Regards

  • we have made the mistake of getting cheap underlay before...

it 'went' after about 18 months

made our new carpet seem rubbish as there was no bounce or spring

That's the thing about buying online - good quality underlay IS cheap! I think I got my 11mm Cloud 9 stuff for about £4m2.

No point when our local fitter charges £3sq m for heavy wool felt underlay.
