Help! priority debts really getting to me

Options
i hope someone can help.

I have £1298.50 of priority debts with bailiff activity on 4 out of 5 debts. I have now sent two emails to JBW with a repayment plan but no answer. They have somehow got my home phone number and are calling on Sundays and weekdays, leaving messages with my elderly mother in law who cannot hear v well.

This is causing me a lot of distress. I am not good at dealing with money/debt issues and I fear I am going to suffer another bout of severe depression.

Please help!

    Hi

If you have various priority debts with bailiff activity I think it’s best to contact us or one of the other free debt advice agencies for full advice. In the mean time, don’t let a bailiff into you home and keep any vehicles you own in a garage or well out of the way.

We work as money advisers for National Debtline and have specific permission from MSE to post to try to help those in debt. If you find you're struggling with debt and need further help try our online advice tool My Money Steps
  • Put in writing to them that all correspondence with you is to be in writing, and that they are not to contact you on the telephone. If the calls are distressing you & your MIL then I'd consider blocking the number, if the calls actually send a number.

Great advise as always from National Debtline above - I'll add a further suggestion that you do an SOA (Statement of Affairs) and post it in here - we can take a look and see if we can see anywhere that you can make savings. You'll find the SOA link in the "Sticky" post at the top of the board. On the depression front, look after yourself, get fresh air and daylight, and make use of whatever your chosen distraction techniques are.

I would not bother looking for approval of a payment plan from JBW.

Just decide what you can afford, and just pay it.

You can pay via there website, you don't need to speak to them at all.

Tough if they don't like it, just keep on paying regardless.

Bailiffs make it deliberately awkward to deal with them, as they are looking for full payment straight away.

Do what I suggest and the stress will melt away.

  • I have spoken to JBW and the 3 others today, the 5th one (another bailiff) are closed til the New Year.

Not easy conversations but I shouldn't have got myself into this mess in the first place to be honest.

I'm just going to have to increase my income, get rid of the debt and then maybe I can relax a bit for once.

I think you're missing the point - yes you have priority debts and yes you need to deal with them. But you can not allow them to dictate your life to you. Listen to Sourcrates - occasionally he talks an awful lot of sense.

Stop thinking you should work more especially if you're ill.

Contact National Debtline or one of the other free debt charities - get their help and let them act as a buffer between you and the bailiffs. Please stop speaking to the bailiffs directly at the moment - it won't help you at all.

  • Thanks Mrs Tinks,

I'm going to be even more ill if I let this situation get any further out of hand. I have my wife and MIL to consider too, I don't want them to be worried about knocks on the door or phone calls.

Sometimes you just have to face up and sort it.

Agreed, but the best way to do that is probably through one of the debt charities. Please do not let them pressure you into things! That is what they do, it's their job. And frankly they can be ruthless and have been known to not be very nice about vulnerable people. This is where the debt charities will help: it's not a matter of not dealing with it, it's about it being dealt with properly and calmly without unfair pressure on you or anyone else.
