He has the key, so i don't think its stolen

Our next-door neighbour's house was broken into and the burglars took the car from their drive, the keys for which were in the house. Having a key doesn't mean it's not stolen. May well not be, but you can't know.

Agree with the others - if you must have this bike, only get it if he gets the new V5 first. But I'd be running a mile. He's one of those 'from his drive' dealers who'll claim he's a private seller and it's sold as seen if you have any problems.

He has "A KEY" Spending £20 to get a lock and key is worthwhile when your flogging something for £800.

He may have another 5 keys and when your bike goes missing in a few weeks he is selling another one, but the plates are different but he has the key.

Can you tax it without the V5C or the numbers from it?

log book loans dont show up on HPI checks
Potentially you don't even know that the vehicle being checked is the one on the drive. New plates with different, valid reg would show up as being fine yet the bike could be stolen. No V5 to check against.

If you apply for a new V5, the DVLA will write to the old keeper to confirm, at which point he can either OK it, or say it's been stolen.

If he's genuine, and it's actually in his name, then get him to arrange a replacement V5 and agree to come back and pay for the bike when it turns up. See how he reacts to that option. I bet it's not as favourably as you'd expect, because he's clearly a trader trying to pull a fast one. It's most likely still registered to whoever traded it in to him.

So he regularly buys and sells vehicles so knows what he is doing but doesn't bother getting the V5C ready for when a buyer is coming to look for it. He then starts searching for it when you ask him, which he should have done before you came.

He sounds abit useless to me.

But this was his 'personal' bike ha ha, always love that one from a backstreet trader.

No V5 no sale is a good rule of thumb; plus of course the seller's details should match those in the V5.

    Fixed that for you ;)
  • Pretty much what everyone's stated above.

The bike isn't rare, the mileage isn't very low, the price isn't amazing. Why buy that bike? Get back onto autotrader/small ads/the Bay/whatever and find another one that has a V5 when you turn up for it.

Don't buy anything from anyone who hasn't got the right docs for it and spins any kind of story.

+1 for the advice above about getting him to apply for the V5 and then you come back, if you're THAT keen to have that particular bike.

Edit: I can see you need something to get to work over Xmas. Could you rent a car in the short term whilst you look for the right bike for you?
