The second diagram will show all the suspension components. If the coil spring has broken, it may have slipped out of the lower seat and the sharp, broken end could impact the tyre, to burst it. There could be another component which has broken of course, but in my years as a workshop foreman I came across a few problems involving cracked or broken coil springs, in VW and other manufacturer's cars which had similar McPherson strut suspension. Were there any sqeaking, creaking or 'rubbing' noises from that area before the incident?
Under the current climate involving VW vehicles, I do not believe that you will have a problem with this matter. You could try to contact VW direct, which may help: -

This happened with my neighbour's Peugot 307 a few years ago, fortunately at very low speed. For it to happen on a car that's only 1-2 years old sounds like it could be a manufacturing fault unless it has done very high mileage (unlikely in a lease car I'd have thought) or there has been some external physical cause.
The simplest solution for the OP would be to claim from insurance.0
