When I couldn't get the wallpaper off in my bedroom I just ripped all of the lath and plaster of and used plasterboard instead. A bit overkill and very messy but a damn site easier! lol

I have a Victorian house too with lath and plaster walls. I too had wall-paper on them but I found the wall-paper came off really easily with the use of a steamer. I started taking down the walls downstairs being totally ignorant of lime plaster and it's characteristics. But having read a little about it, I stopped as it's much better that the modern gypsum plaster. It's breathable and also 'gives' more than gymspum therefore doesn't crack so easily.

Why? It serves little benefit on internal walls, external walls are a different matter.

Are you thinking the steam isn't able to penetrate? I was thinking myself it might be worth scoring a section then try steaming it. Have you tried that?

Because we prefer to retain the integrity of a building, inside and out and I'm not keen on unnaturally flat walls :p;)

Lime plaster applied well can still be flat, it is more to do with the skill of the tradesman and the time taken. I could also give you some numbers for plasterers that are not able to apply modern plaster flat!

I don't feel integrity is lost by removing the lath and plaster, I do try to keep the external walls as they were originally though.
