Gambian currency

Having some difficulty obtaining exchange rate and purchasing the Gambian Dalasi.

No joy from Marks and Spencer and Thompsons said you can't get it in the U.K.

Any help much appreciated.

Check out the Gambian Tourist Charity (google it) for details about the exchange rate (& also loads of fab info about holidaying in Gambia).

    Hi

I went to Gambia a couple of years ago & I had the same trouble trying to get their currency but I got 100.00 pounds enough for the first day or so converted at Lloyds Tsb that was the only place I could get dalais's from I rang up & ordered it over the phone & picked it up from the branch a few days later. The rest I changed over there but I don't think i got such a good rate from memory so wish I had changed up more in the uk. it might be different now.

I was told by Thomas Cook that its a currency thats not sold, but take a few £1.00 coins to get you through the tipping process at the airport and the hotel, and your be able to change the currency at the hotel.

Dont 4get that you need an english £5.00 note per person when you arrive in the country, its tourist tax

In many of these countries you will struggle to get local currency and in most instances possibly don't want to buy it from reputable sources (I have no idea about the Gambia I might add).

But take Zimbabwe for instance there is the official rate and then the real rate and the difference will be huge.

I think your question should be where can I get the best deal on arrival eg Airport banks, city banks, hotel, guy up a back alley etc and some Gambia experts will probably point you in the right direction.

One thing to make sure is you have good clean pounds (English not Scottish etc) they can sometimes be funny with old dirty or folded notes.

in Gambia the hotel rate is bascially the same as banks", the best country is Tunisa, as the exchange rate is et by the goverment and where ever you change the money you get the same rate.

  • Just to let everyone know - have managed to get dalasi from Thomas Cook. I can have as much as I want and they order it for you. Unfortunately the rate on Friday was only 35 dalasi to the £.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

p.s. My tourist tax of £5 was added to my holiday price.

Surprised no Gambia experts have been on. I think I would be taking enough to be getting on with and hoping for a better rate in country. I am assuming the rate someone quoted is correct.

HSBC, FirstDirect & Nationwide offer Dalasiss at around 39 per £1 - check the Travel Money Maximiser though looks like it may be too late for you this time :o

The Post Office also do it. Today's buyback rate was 49.66 something. Don't know the selling rate.

I suspect you'd have to order it, but it's usually a next day thing.
