This "DPF Regeneration" thingy...

Just wondering as we have a fleet of VW Caddy vans at work & after speaking to the regular drivers not one has gone into regen, ever...

There is a sticker on the windscreen showing the regen symbol & explaining what it means & what is involved but the guy with the oldest van (70000 miles ish) has never seen it, or have any other of the drivers.

Is this a VW thing or is regen a bit of a myth, just asking!

  • How do you know none of the vans have gone into regeneration? For most vehicles, under normal operation, regen usually happens without any lights coming on. On my car the only ways to tell are to listen for a change in exhaust note or look for a sudden drop in the instantaneous MPG reading. Regen also makes the exhaust very hot which can produce a bit it a burning rubber smell.

If their journeys are sufficient enough to allow engine and exhaust temperatures to reach the required temperatures then the soot normally collected by the DPF is burnt off and therefore a manual regen wouldn't be required.

An orange symbol is supposed to show & none of the drivers have ever seen it or experienced any "odd" behaviour.

That could explain it. They don't do short trips.

I suspect that the orange symbol is only lit when the car is doing an active regen. If the vans never need to do an active regen (which is automatic), the drivers won't see the symbol lit up or experience any "odd" behaviour.

The orange light normally only comes on if there have been a couple of failed regenerations and the dpf is partially blocked.

It means take it for a good blast, if that fails then it's a garage job.

I dont know what the VW system does but on diesel cars I've driven the orange light only comes on if several regen attempts have failed to alert the driver to drive for sufficient distance for the regen to complete (when the light goes out again).

That would make sense. Otherwise, why do you need a light?

These are fleet vehicles? As in not owned by the company?

It MIGHT be possible that the fleet owners have had the DPF removed and the ECU reprogrammed, it must be a right ball ache having complaints about DPF failures on their vehicles and seeing as the MOT only checks whether one appears to be present, it quite easy to do.
