Can the seller hound us and threaten to pull out days before exchange?
Yes, as long as they don't break the law of harassment (both a civil and a criminal offence). So, for example, a calm polite letter each week asking where the f... you've got to buying the place is OK, but banging on your front-door every morning @ 05:47am and shouting and screaming at you is not OK, it's illegal.
And, of course, equally, the purchaser can hound seller and threaten to pull out days before exchange?0 -
The seller CAN hound you and threaten to pull out, but he stands to lose more money by doing so. Stick to your guns.0

Tell the EA not to contact you and to speak with your Solicitor. This will save agro.0

However, it may also aggravate the seller further. From what the OP has written the EA appears to be on side, and aware that their client is being unreasonable, however daily calls are a bit much, the EA should know that there is unlikely to be daily updates.
It would be worth talking to the EA and asking them not to call so regularly, it's up to them to manage their client's expectations, not you.
However, ceasing all contact with the EA may not be the best plan.0 -
Tell the EA that your purchase was only delayed 16 days, if the seller feels like pulling out over this, you are sure they will find another reason to do so.
You will give weekly updates, but that is it. You could say that with the vendor threatening to rent the property out, you are wondering if its worth putting any more money into legal fees. You need clarification from the vendor that he won't do this before proceeding further.0 -

I'd say to the estate agent that you'd like to view a(nother) specific property they have as if you wait til your seller pulls out as he's threatening to you might miss out, view and then say you have some serious thinking to do in view of the vendors threats about withdrawing.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I hope you get this sorted. Has your vendor got a related tranasaction as they will be jeopardising the chain as well?0

You could always offer to reduce the time between exchange and completion. If the finances are all in place you could even exchange and complete on the same day.0
