2nd hand car

hi, just looking for some advice. I have purchased a 2nd hand car from a local garage on the 24th October, 2016 with 6 months warranty. I bought it on higher purchase. Today I had to take it to the garage as a couple of problems had arisen. The first a clunking sound from the clutch and when driving at 60mph a whistling from the brakes. So under the warranty it says they will pay £400 for each claim. Today they came back saying to have a new clutch put in and a fly wheel fixed will cost £680. They will pay £400 and I have to pay £280. To me they are two different claims =, yet they are adamant they fall under one claim because I told them about the two problems on the same day!! The owner of the garage is so rude, he accused me of burning out the clutch in the 1400 miles I have driven it. Don't really know where to go from here to be honest, but after 8 weeks I don't see why I have to pay £280 towards a car that really after 8 weeks should have no problems. Its a second hand car on a 2012 Vauxhall Astra.

You're lucky they're entertaining a warranty claim and not saying it wear and tear.

Plus the previous four years of use ;)

As above, a clutch is generally thought to be a wear and tear item so I'd snap their hand off at the £400 they're going to pay. The clutch and flywheel are for just the clutch problem you told them about, your brake iisue is separate but you don't seem to have told us what they have said about that.
  • the clutch is one problem, and the fly wheel is the second problem, even after 8 weeks I could burn a clutch out taking the kids to school and general day to day driving? I owned my last car for 10 years and never burned a clutch out. so really a warranty isn't worth anything if I have to be thankful they are going to fix it. so frustrating that I bought a car and 8 weeks later it needs to go to a garage to have a lot of money spent on it.

It's four years old, you don't know what previous drivers were like.

, and the fly wheel is the second problem,
I thought it was a whistling sound from the brakes, what has the flywheel got to do with it?

You're wrong, clutch and flywheel are the same problem. It's probably one or the other that is worn and the other should be replaced as best practice when replacing one.

You mentioned two issues in your first post, clutch and BRAKES, are the brakes fine now?
  • With the brakes, when I am driving on a motorway I get a whistling sound when I press my brakes in the whistling stops, the garage said that was the fly wheel, and the clunking sound was the clutch. Sorry I am no way mechanical minded so just going on what the independent garage (not the garage I bought the car from) told me.

You think the clutch and flywheel is a different problem? I will pay your bill if you can take the flywheel off without removing the clutch.

Its a 4 year old car and clutches wear out. A warranty is for unexpected failures a worn clutch at 4 years is not unexpected or a failure its wear and tear.

Your brake pads probably need removing and refitting, sounds like they need grease on the back of the pad.

Clutch and flywheel are the same issue, pay them the £280 and be happy that this common problem is sorted for a few years....ask to see the old parts as well.

If your last car was driven for 10 years without the need to replace the clutch/flywheel thats good....I bet it wasnt a newish Vauxhall....they not very good on bits like this.
