Thank you for all the replies.
Get them to an optician also check for ear infection etc if there falling over brighter and brighter lights is not the answer, if you must then standard pendant or battern fitting with 100 watt bulb isnt going to break the bank

He has an eye problem that will get worse as he gets older and no cure and his ears are ok. I think you cant have a batten fitting in a bathroom.
    LED ES27 GLS bulb

    Screw E27.
True if light needs to be zone specific but Pendant and battern are suitable for fitting in 99% of bathrooms outside zones (safe areas)

The light is above the basin which is next to the bath which has a power shower so that was why the sparks quoted what they did but he is only after a brighter bulb for now and not a new light.

Fitting you stated is wall and above window? that would normally mean height and distance from zones to meet requirements to be outside zone hence battern/pendant etc fine

The 3 sparks that he got to look at the light said he could not have a batten/pendant light as he required a Zone specific light. Zone 2 i think. The light is on the ceiling but all he is after is a LED bulb for now.
  • swap the fitting out for something like this:

i have seen these in elec wholesaler's for half this price branded by a company called ALL LED. they have integrated LED's so no lamps to buy and are VERY bright. they are also IP44 rated, so suitable for bathrooms.

Home Bargains do a 12W 1500 lumen LED standard shape light bulb for under £3 (eluminate brand) - in 3 different white tones. I have those in my hall and landing. I bought Bayonets but they also had screw fit (it looked like they had more screw fit than Bayonets). They seem brighter than the "100w equivalent" bulbs they replaced.
  • I got something like this from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00XHNV0BA/
Very easy to fit and very bright, actually very surprised about how much better it is compared to traditional light bulbs! Very easy to fit too.

Then they are talking out of there behinds he could not have a batten lampholder ( maybe ) but he could have a battern fitting defiantly it would simply need to be IP rated as an example

but plenty out there certainly wouldn’t cost 200 240 to buy and fit?

Boohoo, I have that similar fitting. As biggles said you cant fit high power led bulbs in there, as the bulbs for high lumens are either too fat or too long.

Put a converter in as wobbly dog suggests is also often a problem with these fittings as the y connector could be too wide to screw in and then the bulb positioning could be wrong. Even if you could bodge this they take up too much length especially as the enclosure is round.

for low power hallway lights these fittings are great.

After playing with these fittings types so much, and wanting light, next time I am going to put up tube light fittings and install led tubes.

Thank you for the ideas you have given me.
As i have said the old guy doesn't want to fit a new light yet jusyt a bulb.
He told me yesterday that he is thinking of re-doing his bathroom out and getting a walk-in bath/shower as things are getting harder for him to do with his eyesight as it is.
He said that he has an insurance policy that matures in April and he is going to use that to pay for the new bathroom.
My mrs took him to B&Q to look at LED light bulbs yesterday but there were so many types he kept asking for the old 100 watt bulbs and my mrs kept telling him that they don't do them anymore.

They do still do them but they are called 'rough service'. The filaments etc are supposed to be a bit sturdier but otherwise they are exactly the same as the old bulbs.

    E.g. Maplin do a pack of 10 100w for £5.
