A friend is self employed. No employees and works from home. She produces and packages her own product. She sells online both retail and direct to the public and intermittently at exhibition centres and shopping centres. She uses her car to transport goods and display furniture but doesn't do deliveries. She obviously needs business use for her car but doesn't require cover for the goods in transit.

What is her job title for car insurance purposes?

    Self Employed, Furniture Dealer?
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

She transports goods but doesnt need cover for goods in transit?

So if she is going to an exhibition and needs to stop off for an unexpected loo break whilst inside all the goods get stolen would she not want to claim?

The display furniture is to display items on the show stand. She doesn't sell furniture.

Having the stock insured would be a bonus but its not a requirement.
  • It depends on what the product is. If it's jewellery, she's a jeweller.

Its make up. She demonstrates and sells.
  • Phone the insurer and ask what they want to list her as. I had a similar situation recently where the only job title that fit was 'youth worker', which wasn't entirely accurate. I rang the insurer explained my job role and they said youth worker was fine as my job fit in that category from their point of view.
  • Her current insurer is with market traders association who assume everyone is a market trader. Most insurers don't quote for market traders so a different job title is needed for mainstream insurers and quote sites.

Her insurance is due tomorrow and I suspect she will renew with her current insurer but every year she asks about getting cheaper insurance and the job title is always a problem.
  • A visit to a local broker might be a good idea for next year. I think they'd be able to explain her options to her in detail.
