Just to clarify I just want everything in order should my husband die first.
We are very happily married.
Although this doesn't apply to you because your relationship is good, it's worth mentioning for other people reading the thread that having the family home owned by only one spouse can leave the non-owner in a vulnerable situation because they have no control over the owner taking out a second mortgage or using the house as collateral for other debts or even selling the house.0 -
Our house is in my name and we were looking into adding my husband as we were worried about the asset situation should I need care. ie would the house be considered as mine , so be taken for care costs, leaving my husband homeless ?
However, the Age UK website says that it doesn't matter whose name the house is in and that the remaining spouse would have the same rights as if the house was in joint names.
Also, unless a will says otherwise, one spouse inherits the house should the other die, so we've decide to save the £100 or so. (Been married over 40 years and both in late sixties)0 -

If one of a couple needs residential care and their partner will stay living in the family home, the value of the property isn't taken into account in the financial assessment. It doesn't matter whether the home is owned fully by one or as joint tenants or tenants in common.0
