Paying 2 Energy Companies!!

I moved into a new property in Feb 2014.
I was not made aware of my energy company and by September 2014 using MSE joined First Utility as it felt wrong I wasn't paying for my gas and electricity.
I set up gas/electric and started paying by DD in Oct 2014.
In May 2015 I disputed by bill readings with First Utility as they differed.
It was found that I was paying someone else's meter as First Utility had the incorrect meter number for myself..
This was rectified I was given £100 refund for all the stress and hassle and First Utility wrote off £319 on my account.
I have today received a bill from EON for £1,314. My first communication with them.
Elec from Feb 2014 to Oct 2015
Gas from Feb 2014 to June 2015
Redrow (the building company) notified Eon on 7 Dec 2016 that I had moved in on Feb 2014, nearly 3 years later.
EON say they were notifed about the electric in Oct 2015 but not notified about the gas until June 2015, this being due to the incorrect meter being given.
Does anyone know where I stand? Do I have to pay that amount to Eon 2 years later? In which case I have been paying for my gas twice!
Some advice please?

    Hi!
Can you clarify a couple of things for me?

Is this a property you purchased or rented?
When you moved into your property in Feb 2014, was it E.on who supplied the gas/electricity?
Did you take meter readings when you moved in/at all?
If you took said readings, did you take a note of the meter number?

I don't want to sound harsh but ultimately you should've been aware that someone was supplying your gas and electricity, and you wouldn't be getting it for free, right? It's not fair to just rely on someone to tell you who supplies your utilities. A very quick call to any utility provider and they'll tell you who currently supplies your property.

I know some companies like British Gas have a policy where they write off debts owed over a year ago, so you would only owe a years worth of gas/electricity (I could be wrong on that one...)

You also mention paying for utilities twice... but didn't First Utility refund you and compensate you? (Obviously I don't know if £319 was your full bill, but surely they wouldn't be allowed to charge you given they were charging the wrong meter, or did I read that wrong?)

    Hi welcome to MSE :hello:

Where do you stand? In deep doo-doo's I'm afraid.

You should have registered with the existing supplier when you moved in

    Good luck sorting this out.

Hi - welcome to the forum. Having purchased 5 houses from new, I know only too well how confusing it can be to set up correct billing. The developer will have entered into contracts with a supplier for electricity and a transporter for gas. Details of their nominated suppliers should have been included in the handover pack. Sadly, there is no legal requirement for the developer to tell the supplier/s that the house has been sold, or to provide meter readings. Most do because their Accounts Department will keep getting the bills.

Your mistake was not understanding the Deemed Supplier process and, ultimately, the buck does stop with you. The Back Billing Code doesn't apply as I assume that the Deemed Supplier has been billing the developer - and the bills have been paid. Now that the penny has dropped, the developer has shown the supplier evidence of a transfer of ownership and, presumably, has been refunded the amount paid. I doubt that FU had the wrong meter. They took over the supply erroneously, at your request, and had no option but to bow out and credit you accordingly.

The bit that I do not understand is why E.oN has not billed you up to date. It would seem that another large request for payment may be coming your way - sorry.

It is a mess and I suspect that all you can hope for is time to pay. I hope that you have done the sensible thing and put money to one side knowing that this day would come?

Hello Dawn2705 and welcome to the Forums.

With new builds, the developer or builder gives us details of when a new occupant takes over. We'll close the builders/developers account and open a new one for the incoming occupant based on the information the builder/developer gives us. This can be quite a time after people move in particularly with large developments. Although, must admit, I've not come across many where it's taken this long. I suspect the mix up with the meters added to the delay.

We've a New Connections team who'll be looking after the whole development. Let them have a copy of the change of ownership papers (nothing private, only the bit confirming the handover date). Meter readings for this time would be good. They'll also need your full name and address (including any plot number if relevant), meter serial numbers and up to date readings. Pictures of the meters would be great. Probably best to email through our website using the attachment at the top of the 'contact us' page.

They'll use this information to make sure the account is set up as it should've been in 2014 and explain what they've done. If you include your phone number, they can give you a call if any more information is needed.

I suspect our bill covers the period from when you moved in up until when we were told about the change in responsibility. Guessing though. Do the meter serial numbers on our bill match those on the actual meters?

We'll be happy to look at setting up a payment arrangement to spread the balance over a more manageable period.

Hope this is useful Dawn2705. Let me know if I can help as happy to do so.
