Fixing broken door handle

I have a broken door handle. It seems like one side the spring broke and the other side doesn't have one.

Is it just a case of replacing the spring or is there more to it?

(It looks like the mechanism is nailed in.)

so just the handles, the mechanism doesn't need touching?

No. The latch can stay in place. just unscrew the handles (as you appear to have already done) and fit new handles.

  • Hi,

the handle will still work, though not spring back to normal position, or swap handle on a door that is seldom used.

when you buy the handle often the clip-in spindle is included. Unless the lock is jammed it should be fine!

  • Do you use the lock? If so then you need to make sure the centre (the vertical distance between the centre of the handle and the key opening) is the same. Usually it's 55mm but you need to double check.

no no lock in use; it's just a door to the living room.

well I just replaced it but no joy; it seems like the latch is fubared. The latch plate is ~14cm long, and contains both latch and lock (although the lock is not in use).

any idea what I need to buy to replace it?
  • Buy a new latch mechanism (aka sashlock) off amazon with the same height, width and backset. That's it. The centre distance doesn't matter since you're not using the actual lock mechanism.

It seems like the dimensions are 73mm wide x94/95mm high.

I can't seem to find any sort of lock approaching those dimensions.
