Anyone familiar with Bristol?

Anyone familiar with the area what areas would you suggest for someone / a couple looking to buy and rent their spare rooms to make a shared house.
So far we are considering Southmead / Filton as it is near the hospital and several other big employers so has a lot of young professionals.
Also is the area of the city we would prefer to live

Southmead has lots of young professionals?!
I would be looking at Southville/Bedminster but that's just personal preference.0 -
Can't go wrong with many areas of the North Fringe of Bristol. That said, I'd personally rule out Southmead specifically - some pockets are really quite undesirable.
Not knowing your budget, I'd suggest Henbury, Horfield, Bishopston along with Filton as some ideal areas. Bradley Stoke / Stoke Gifford are a bit further out, but more family orientated.
The market is reasonably buoyant like the rest of Bristol. Since Frenchay was shut and merged with Southmead hospital - it has pushed rental and house prices up around here. You also have Airbus / Rolls Royce and the MOD which drives a lot of the market.
I live in the new Charlton Hayes (Filton Keynes) development on the old Filton Airfield, sandwiched between Patchway and Filton. I really like it here, good mix of young families and young professionals. But all properties are new builds, so if that doesn't float your boat then don't consider.
One thing I would add about Fulton specifically is that a lot of houses are HMO's due to the close proximity of the University of West of England.0 -
Have you considered Horfield? It has some nice areas and I would say it's nicer than both Filton and Southmead.
Personally I'd avoid Southmead as it's not the nicest, though obviously great for commuting to your work and I'm sure you'll find it easy to pick up house sharers from the hospital.
If you are looking for something a little more long term, Bradley Stoke is nice, but its not cheap and doesn't sound like it would fit your needs right now... that said, it's certainly an area for the future.
Just bear in mind that wherever you live in Bristol, traffic sucks. The public transport system is one of the worst of any city - poor train links and terrible buses. You might avoid the worst of that if you work irregular hours though!0 -
Since the closing of Frenchay hospital and Southmeads 'super hospital' I'd consider Southmead to possibly be 'on the up' as it is affordable and very close for the staff who will work there.
3 bed semi in S'mead seems to go for between 180-220.
3 bed semi in Filton 220-250
3 bed semi in Horfield 240-280
Budget probably looking at around £300k max, I might not consider S'mead following advice on here.
Regarding new builds I'm not a massive fan and prefer older houses, I think more often than not the rooms are bigger as are the gardens.0 -
