Liam Fox: UK may stay in EU Customs Union

UK may try to stay in EU customs union, says Liam Fox
https://www.ft.com/content/f2f8b090-c511-11e6-9043-7e34c07b46ef

Which would, among other things, put Liam Fox out of a job as we'd have to comply with all EU trade deals and could not vary tariffs to make our own trade deals.

So just to recap....

The leavers basically wanted just a handful of things out of Brexit.

1) Significantly reduced immigration

2) Ability to do our own free trade deals with the rest of the World

3) See 1 & 2 (and add in some incoherent mutterings about control, corruption, failed union, ECJ, Federal Superstate, Army, Euro , blah, blah, blah...)

We now have David Davis admitting that mass immigration (even of low skilled people) will continue so that UK business doesn't face labour shortages, and Liam Fox admitting pulling out of the Customs Union is maybe not such a good idea after all.

Anyone care to compare those admissions to their pre-referendum statements?:rotfl:

Yes but both the tories and labour seem to be doing their best to resurrect them.

Staying in the Customs Union means booze cruises to Calais can continue. and you will be able to bring back as much cheap Spanish brandy and Greek ouzo from holiday as you want.

But seriously, what most people want is a deal which is the best for the economy. If that means being in a customs union then so be it. It's encouraging that even an Uber Leaver like Fox is coming around to realising this.

Theresa May has been smart to put the Uber-Leaver Brextremists in charge of leaving.....

As they are now vindicating all the main arguments of Remaining having seen from the inside that we have little choice if we are to maintain our national prosperity.

the figures you referred to, seemed to suggest we would continue to get richer but maybe 0.15% of GDP per capita per year was an issue 0r maybe not.
    has anything changed?

It's quite amazing to see someone who was so c*ck sure of a remain result go around trying their best to suggest brexiters didn't get what they wanted.

This is small fry in the grand scheme of things.

We haven't even started negotiations, so all this is simply talk. "May" and "try" being a big clue here.

Six months in job, and Fox and Davis haven't yet decided what they want.

The cards close to the chest cliche is inaccurate; it is said they don't want the opponent to see their hand, but they seem to have forgotten to look at it themselves. Are the best cards in the blind, or on the table, and who is bluffing?

Lets tell the other side all our tolerances and fall back positions, lol, so good for Britain's interests.

Hamish stop telling us what you think we wanted. We wanted OUT of the EU what happens after that is then open for negotiation.

The government is just fannying around at the moment.
