Service warning lamp is on Citroen Berlingo

Hi
I think I need to take my Citroen Berlingo multispace to a garage to be checked out but thought I would ask here in case there is anything I can do first.

The orange triangle with an exclamation mark started being displayed yesterday after I pulled up in a car park. It is on permanently, not flashing.

The manual says that this indicates "major faults" with the advice "Consult alert log in the display or screen: refer to the "Audio equipment - Trip Computer " section of chapter 9. Contact a CITROEN dealer or a qualified workshop.

I have looked at the fault log under diagnostics in thr trip computer and it simply says "no fault.

There are no other warning lamps showing.

The day before the lamp showed I drove too fast over a speed bump that I had not seen.

When the ignition is turned off there is a high pitched whistling sound coming from the engine, close to the coolant reservoir that lasts for about 30 seconds. The coolant reservoir is full. The oil is full.

The car is due a service. But it seems this is a fault beyond just needing a service. I will be taking it to a garage. But If anyone has any ideas for things I could try first then I would be very grateful. Thank you for anyone who has had the patience to read this long post and many many thanks to anyone with any suggestions.

It will need the engine codes read to know what it might be.

You would need a code reader for that. Even then, interpreting it might not be straightforward.

Trip computers often wont show ALL fault codes.

There can be codes stored in the ECU that only an OBD tool will read.

I don't quite know why, but Peugeot/Citroen don't seem to work with normal ODBII fault code readers (at least for certain faults).

It doesn't help that Peugeot/Citroen refused to make all of their cars ODBII compatible until the very latest they could get away with (2001 for Petrol cars, 2004 for Diesel).

For decades they built cars with torx security bolts on literally everything (back when TORX sockets were not readily/cheaply available to the public).

They like to protect their dealerships and keep the trade coming into their service departments, only instead of dropping prices to reasonable levels, they do it by making it extremely hard for any one else to fix their cars.

I would not expect the trip computer to ever show anything other than "OK", except for maybe simple stuff.

Agree with the Torx coment. Had to buy a Torx screwdriver to remove the rear diffuser enabling access to the lamps. Luckily there is a motor factors at the end of my street.

Citroen/Peugeot use Lexia/Planet diagnostics, there are plenty of people with this equipment and I would suggest joining a Citroen Forum where you will probably find a member on the Forum in your area willing to do a diagnostic for beer money.

Having a code reader doesn't make you a diagnostic technician

Having the Peugeot/Citroen reader goes a long way towards making you one. Being a member of one of the Peugeot/Citroen forums and using the search facility will certainly give you an idea of the knowledge that a member with the diagnostics has gained. Once you've used the equipment a few times makes you realise how much this diagnostic equipment becomes essential.
  • Car back from the garage. They say that there was no fault, it was simply telling me that it was due a service. It has now had a service and the service "timer" reset. No warning lamp on now.
Thank you everyone for your interest, input and help.
