Best method to store DVDs

Good Morning Folks

I have about half a dozen family related DVDs which are of sentimental value. I would like to store them in a secure place and was thinking of places like:

DropBox, Cloud, Google Drive, Sky Drive, Amazon etc.

Which one would you recommend? What things do I need to consider in order to decide?

Thanks

  • Copy onto a couple of other DVDs / BDs, and hard drives. Store in separate bank vaults.

Most / all of the services you list should be OK for online storage, they aren't likely to be going away any time soon. Having at least one physical, off-site, backup would be sensible though if the data is important.

    Thanks

    Any further suggestions greatly appreciated.
  • I have been copying a lot of old recordings off of DVDs onto a hard drive on my PC, which I then back up to an external hard drive and I also back up a copy to a cloud based solution called Crash Plan. I'm planning to buy another external hard drive that I will make a semi regular backup to and store in another location (just in case). Some of it is stuff that I couldn't get from somewhere else if I lost it (stuff I made myself or rare recordings that you can't buy) so it's worth the effort, to me.
  • Just to add - for the cloud based stuff, do a test recovery of data to see what the transfer speed is like and if it is reliable. I tried a solution once that was so slow to recover data from, it would have taken months to get it all back and it kept timing out too. Best to test these things now than when you need them the most!

    Thanks folks

  • I've a portable USB hard disk (2TB) & all my family photos are on that. It's stored at work - I suspect it's most at risk when being shuttled home for another load.
I think it's this one from Amazon but I'll bet a bit of checking of sales will see it cheaper.
  • If you have Amazon prime you get 10gb of free storage. Rip the DVD to ISO then use handbrake to make it into mp4 format.

It's also cheap to pop a copy on a USB stick or external HD.

It's worth knowing that DVDRs do have a shelf life of a few years/decades

Yes - try asking the question on the Tech board as this has very little to do with 'marriage, relationships and families'.
