For some time the mother in law in has been suffering from depression/ mental illness and my wife is her register carer. This weekend things got so bad that sh had to be taken into hospital.

To try and help we went through the post to make sure their were no bills due and have found that she ow's nearly £5,000 in credit card debt where shes not spent anything but just paid back interest only for the entire year. This is most probably ones of the causes of her illness as she could never pay it back as she just has the state pension to live on.

Looking at the various mental illness charity, there is a chance that we can get the debt written off or at least the interest frozen due to her mental capacity. So with her permission i'm going to send letters pus backup from Mh professionals to the following companies to ask for this. Whilst we and the rest of her family speak with her and the mental health team about longer term finical care and support ie LPA's

The question is what address do I send the letters to for the credit card companies? searching here and google i've uncovered half a dozen different for each one and its a bit confusing. Any advice would be appreciated please.

The credit cards i need to send to are:
  • HSBC Credit Card
  • Capital One
  • Tesco
  • Sainsburies

Any help would be really appreciated as if i can take this worry of her (and her daughter) it would make a less worrysome xmas

Thanks
Marcus

    Hi,

I doubt there will be a specialist dept dealing with mental health issues within these organisations.
I would just address the letters to the compliance officer at each company, doing this should ensure due diligence in dealing with the situation.

In a similar situation I sent letters to the addresses on the statements. I then got replies from the more specialist/third party departments which I used for future correspondence.
The interest/ charges were frozen for a month at a time, but there's been no problem with extending it further. If your relative is well enough I would suggest a letter from them giving permission for the companies to discuss the account with you. Otherwise without a power of attorney you're going to run into a data protection brick wall.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
