Advice needed re challenging council over "unnecessary" work on block of flats

True. It's a public letter as such that's been sellotaped to the front entrance of the block, but it states that with regards to renewing the flooring to all 5 floors, "it is proposed that the works be undertaken should there be no objections from residents".On the up side, you say your friend has had a letter asking whether anyone has any issues with the work being done - so she has this opportunity to put her case at least.0 -
Was the cost of the lift shared between 25 flats?
EG 25x£20,000 so it cost £500,000 ?!!!
Or were the 5 private flats expected to fund the lift for the whole place?
Surely a lift isn't that much?!0 -
The private flats all had to pay that amount. That's the way it goes with these kind of situations.
Plus this particular council doesn't seem to be that considerate when it comes to payment plans.0 -
Ultimately, from looking at the floors today, the only issue with them is that they're dirty, which appears to have been caused by the mess left by whichever company/companies have been involved in building/maintenance works.
I also got it wrong about the cost of the lift works - it was £7,000 (apologies for that). £20,000 is the total amount for works that have been done that my friend is paying off.0 -
We own a btl and 8 years ago the lift was replaced. 42 flats over 4 floors our share was about £6,000.
Not an ex council block .0 -
The amount she's been charged for the lift sounds completely out of order to me. We had lift replacement in my ex council block, which is 10 floors and it came to much less than that.
In addition to all the other suggestions it might be worth your friend getting in touch with her local councillor and MP.

I have a novel suggestion. Why not introduce a law allowing the Council to buy back private flats for 50% of their market value, provided the Council have owned the lease for a minimum of 5 years, and agree not to sell it for a profit for another five years. Similar to a law called "Right To Buy" from over 30 years ago, the one that meant there is now a huge shortage of much needed social housing throughout the country.0
