Online security

I herd on radio interview a while back about an app that generates individual email address for each new online account you setup. Thus if an account your are subscribed to is compromised it is only the one email address that is compromised.

I am struggling to find this app now. Does anyone know of it?

I don't know of an app to do this, as any app must be connected to your domain provider / mailbox provider. But you can replicate the functionality with gmail and the + modifier. If you open a gmail account, you can append anything to your mailbox (account) name and the mail will be auto-delivered to your main mailbox. I use this exact technique for the same reason.

Ie: if you create futurejones@gmail.com account on gmail, you can then set your email address to futurejones+moneysavingexpert@gmail.com, futurejones+tesco@gmail.com, futurejones+whatever@gmail etc. All mails will be delivered to your inbox with zero configuration on Gmail.

Are you sure it was not a tool that created new card details when shopping online? Generated a new credit card number and 3 digit code that was a one use only.

  • There are quite a few services that will give you an email which is only valid for 10 minutes.

Search online for "10 minute email"

But as the name suggests, they will self-destruct after 10 minutes so may not be what you are looking for.

Why would having one of your online accounts compromised have any effect on the email address you used to sign up for it?
