Hertz care hire - watch out at the airports

I just thought I would warn any potential car hirers...
This company is coming up the cheapest, so as a result when we got to the airport there was a long queue and all the other hire desks were clear.
This on it's own is a warning if you want to sail through fast. Our queue was an hour and a half long....
Aside from that, there is a clause in the insurance conditions stating that there is a £550 excess for ANY damage whatsoever....which they kindly point out that you can conveniently avoid by paying an EXTRA £24 for a 0% excess.
Well after a long wait, who is going to take that risk. This is probably why they are looking cheaper - they're NOT with this added 0% excess fee.
It was pointed out to me that it does say so in the small print, so I pointed out that although they could have my extra £24, they would lose me as a future customer....for which we were upgraded....so they did redeem themselves a bit, and their service was good, so no complaints about the company themselves.

I think this extra charge is fairly common with UK hire car companies.
I hired a car last year and took out this cover with an online insurance company (forget the name).
The car was subject to a hit and run during the night and I had to pay the £500 excess when I returned it back to the HC company. A couple of months later I was reimbursed the £500.0
