Send them a LBA, they are denying your basic consumer rights. Write it and send it via e-mail but also by post. Give them 7 days to respond.
Pre-action protocol dictates 14 days to be given in straightforward cases and up to 3 months in more complex ones.

In what way? They are quite correct that as the item is more than 6 months old it is the responsibility of the purchaser to provide evidence that the fault was inherent. If the OP gets an inspection done and that does show an inherent fault then it's pretty clear from the chat with Scan that they will then accept a return and proceed accordingly.0
