Owning two cars [temporarily]. How best to insure?

I am taking ownership of a new [to me] car shortly to replace my current one. I am getting the new one from a family member, so will need to sell the current one myself rather than trade it in. I will, therefore, be the registered keeper for two cars for a short while and I don't know how best to handle the insurance
When I have come to apply for insurance for my new vehicle, the part where I declare my no claims history states "This must have been earned on a UK car insurance policy, in your own name, and must not be in use on any other policy." (my emphasis). I presume that means I cannot use the no-claims history on a policy that remains in place on my existing car.
Would I be right in thinking, therefore, that my only options are either to insure my new car with a new provider and lose my no claims history or update my current policy with the details of the new car and take out a new policy on my old car and cancel it (stumping up any associated costs) once I sell it?

Will you be driving both cars?
I was in the position 2 years ago. I transferred my insurance to my new car and declared my old car SORN while in the process of selling it.0 -

Phone your existing insurers to change to your new car and ask them to temporarily also cover your old cover while you sell it.0 -
