How long does a company have to charge a service to my credit card?

First post - so bear with me if I'm not in the right place!!

How long does a company have (if there is even a statue of limitations on this?!) to charge an amount to my credit card for a service provided?

A number of months ago I organised a service through a large company and provided them with my credit card details for payment. A few weeks after the event I noticed that nothing had been charged, and still, months later, nothing has been charged to my account.

Obviously I am not in a rush to tell them about their mistake - Don't judge!! - How long do I wait to assume that I am not going to be charged at all and re-adjust my budget not to include this chunk of money on my credit card?

  • 6 years.

So a little while to wait.
  • Six months.

Although you're liable for payment for upto six years.
  • They have six months to claim it from your card automatically. After that time the pre-authorisation would no longer be valid but they would be perfectly legally and reasonably entitled to ask you to provide the payment for up to six years.

Far, far too long. Two weeks would be reasonable.

Why obviously? If your boss forgets to pay you next month how long will you wait until you tell them?

I don't generally expect you to say anything that makes any sense, but this is yet another low point.

So has the charge come through yet?

I have two outstanding charges on my cards, one from April 2015 for around £200 that I rang the company about and they claimed not to know anything about it so I left it at that, the other from August 2016 for £7.50 from a cinema that did show up as pending but then disappeared and that I haven't bothered to waste my time following up. I'm happy to pay both if the transactions reappear.
