Kwik Fit - MOT - "new" failure on re-test?!

No.
Changing the gaiter will just involve undoing the balljoint at the outer end, and dropping the arm down a bit so the hub can be moved up. Changing the arm involves undoing that balljoint, then undoing the inner pivot, then checking/adjusting the tracking once it's back together.
The fact that the gaiter's just been done means that the balljoint will come apart easily. The only duplication is in getting the car onto the ramp, into the air, wheel off, and balljoint off.
Will Kwik Fit not charge by the hour though? I've no idea how long these jobs take, but unless it would run into a second hour if both were done at the same time, you're paying twice for a job that could have been done in a single hour?0 -

The CV Gaiter was originally scheduled for half-an-hour - however they then found they had ordered a "hard" material version.
They explained they could order in a "softer" material, which would only take the half hour - but would likely last less than half the time of the harder version (which would take 2 hours to replace, due to a "clip" of some sort needing to be removed from the old CV gaiter).
I opted to keep the harder version - which they did replace (yesterday) - without any increase in charge - *EDIT which did indeed take them 2 hours*.
With the Wishbone, I think they have charged Labour (£40) on top of the part (£50) - but I believe they have absorbed the cost of the Tracking within the total of the £90 for the Wishbone replacement.
I'm guessing that Tracking costs around £40 - i.e. the same as the Wishbone Labour.
When I phoned them a little earlier, they confirmed the total cost would be £160, i.e. -
A) £70 for the CCV Gaiter (for the say £5 part - plus £65 labour charge)£90 for the Wishbone (£50 part - plus £40 labour - with the Tracking within that)
(the original price they quoted for the total of fitting a new Wishbone was £108 - which I got them to knock down to £90)0 -
At the end of the day, you took a 19yo car in for an MOT, which revealed one job that needed doing for the car to meet a legally-required absolute bare-minimum acceptable standard, and another - in a related part - that was very close. Doing that one job caused the other to cross that line.
You will be driving away having had both jobs that needed doing done. Great.0 -
A KF thread that doesn't involve them ripping somebody off something chronic... that's a first.
The bush is likely classed as an affected area for the repair.
If you replace it how can you appeal it ? They will need to see the car in its current condition. But price seems reasonable and considering the advisory before they did any work it's likely it's just unfortunate it went further when removing ball joint0 -

We don't know they've used the free retest. It's highly unlikely they recorded the fail and will just put through the pass when the jobs done0 -
The tester said although he would normally be obliged to re-fail the car he didn't want to make me have to pay for another MOT, so if I got the wishbone replaced he would do the re-test again.
So in this instance my re-test will "officially" happen after they do the new wishbone / bush / tracking.0 -

Although I think part of why the tester offered that was down to the fact he realised it was likely the fitters' work on the CV Gaiter that had caused the Bush to deteriorate...although he didn't say that.
The quoter for the wishbone then told me why the bush may have deteriorated.0
