Disposing of old desktop

I have a very old unused Dell desktop, sitting around getting dusty ...
I've been told that I can dispose of it safely if I remove the motherboard and put a drill through the hard disk. Problem is that I can't see how to get at the thing. What's the easiest way to get at the innards?

Which model? A side panel will come off via a release "catch" or a couple of screws. Remove the hard disk (may be something interesting on it!?); there's nothing on the motherboard to worry about.0

Dell dimension 4600
I know there must be an easy way in, just can't find it!0 -
Pull this bit back toward you . There may be a "hand screw" you need to undo first ..

(Sorry about my crappy drawing)0 -
Oh, you are both brilliant. I've got the cover off - I take it that the hard disk is the doodah in the housing behind the on off switch?0

Lol.... funny thread. Why not just download Darik's Nuke and Boot. Properly the nuke the hard drive (will take about 40 hours) and then bang it on eBay. Y'never know, might pay for your christmas drinks.0

I don't think I drink enough to make the eBay effort worthwhile. Besides I spend a lot of time with people dealing with the challenges of digital record keeping and they all say physically destroy the hard disk. And now I've liberated it from the casing that's just what I'm going to do.0

Fair enough, but I promise you..... it's not necessary.I don't think I drink enough to make the eBay effort worthwhile. Ok. But the deed is done now and the whole lot will shortly be wending its way to the recycling centre.0

Mr S (retired IT) says the only way to destroy a hard drive is with a hammer.0
