Of course it was a joke. I didn't think you were black for a minute, it was sarcasm. It just sounded like you were trying to say it was common for people of other ethenic origion to have problems with authority.

I'm not actually "black", and neither do I talk like that! (I hope that was just a joke?) You might be surprised how you would be treated if you weren't white! The law doesn't even come into it most of the time.

I haven't rung them, but I have written letters to both the council and Inland Revenue, with no response or even acknowledgement.

So why didn't you follow it up? If i don't get replies i don't just sit back and wait for them to come to me - i persue it until i get a satisfactory response.

    Hi all,

I haven't managed to get the enthusiasm to ring them, and am getting further disheartened with continued letters.

....I will have to find the strength to telephone these departments at some point...!-rapido

    rapido,

You have to get help with this. You know that you have to contact people as you have said a few times yourself. Ring/visit CLA or CAB as they can look at your overall picture - they are the experts, not your dad who can only be supportive. Please ring/visit CLA/CAB as this is not going to go away.

Rapido, I could give you a kick up the backside (and I'm joking too as Relay was last month) !! I can't believe this is still ongoing and you've been worrying about it all this time especially as everyone on this site is telling you to seek advice.

It is not right that the CLA can't help until legal proceedings start. Go on to their website www.clsdirect.org.uk/en/directory/directorysearch.jsp Put in your postcode and go on 'advanced search'. Then tick welfare benefits and 'specialist' advice required and it should throw up all the relevant agencies in your locality.

You agreed you'd been overpaid once and say you've repaid it. Did you repay the council tax which accrued through this overpayment?

Is there another overpayment being considered or has a decision been made?

Councils are very keen on issuing bankrupcy proceedings these days to enforce council tax liability.

You'll not get the help you need from this site as it's too complicated an issue now and no-one really knows where it's up to and what's actually happened. You HAVE to sit down with someone who specializes in these type oif cases so you can go through everything. It CAN be sorted but you must do it now or there will be bankruptcy proceedings for the council tax and possibly for these unpaid taxes if you don't challenge these debts or make arrangements to pay if they can be proved to be outstanding.

Think positive and do that search right away. Once you've got a phone number ring them tomorrow at 9 am.
I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too!

Many thanks for your advice, I did this and got the Haringey Law Centre as my nearest one (7 miles away). I rang up and their answer was short and sweet: "you don't live in Haringey? we can't help you" (click).

And there is no-one in my particular borough, so it seems the CLS are a bit useless in this respect, but at least I've got the CAB down the road here to fall back on......

Many thanks for your advice and support! I should be ringing the CAB next then...
    rapido,

You have to get more momentum with this, eg. when they said they couldn't help as you don't live in Haringey you should have said that you urgently need help and where can you get help and that Haringey was the nearest to you. Don't let them end the conversation until you have an answer. If you don't get help with CLA (try them again) then straight away ring CAB, have both numbers with you when you go to the phone. Someone suggested you go to CAB in September!!! If you are more insistent that you need help and if they can't help keep on until you find someone that will help, you can sort out where you stand within a couple of days at the most. The experts will also help you sort it out as well as tell you where you stand. Do it Monday and post straight back.....
