Can the LL sue the OP for compensation, for not following the extremely obvious due diligence, and requesting the gas engineer produce his Gas Safe credentials?0

The letting agents really are the ones at fault aren't they? From the account given they seem to be using someone cheap to do the work and not bothering to check whether they are a gas safe man.
Apart from the safety aspect, the 'engineer' may well have done damage in dismantling the boiler. If I were the LL I would be expecting the LA to cover the cost of sorting out the mess and giving them notice.0 -

The man is messing with (including taking apart) gas boilers which he is not qualified or licenced to do !
I agree - CO poisoning and boiler safety aren't funny and it could have been very dangerous. However, you were lucky and thankfully your family is safe.
cf the dangerous driver.. who has no business driving (playing with boilers) if he can't control a car safely (doesn't know how to work with boliers). If he endangers lives by reckless driving (playing with boilers) he should be reported to the police (appropriate registers) and be banned from driving (working with boilers). However if he nearly hits you but is stopped just short (takes apart your boiler but is stopped just before making it dangerous), you get to complain but there's no compensation for a 'near miss'0 -

The LL has suffered a loss; his boiler was damaged as a direct result of the Tenant's extreme negligence in not insisting on full Gas Safe ID check before work commenced. The OP also pointed out the engineer broke "my" (sic) dial!!!
A clearer case of negligence you could not wish for, and I can see no-win no-fee compensation lawyers lining up to sue the OP for every penny and more (that he might make from his vexatious case against whoever for whatever)

There are lots of bits that an unqualified person can legally dismantle on a gas boiler. The boiler has a gas side, that he can't touch. But the water side can be dealt with by someone reasonably competent to deal with general plumbing.
As a small-time landlord, I diagnose and fix about half the problems tenants have with their boilers without having to pay for an engineer. In the last couple of years, this has included:- Tenant unable to operate the thermostat.
- Out of gas. Tenant has a key meter, but hadn't topped it up.
- System water pressure too low. So, I topped it up.
- Let air out of radiators.
- Press reset button on boiler.
- Tenant's toaster tripped the electricity supply, so boiler wouldn't operate.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
