Dodgy builders.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place...
I employed a builder to do some work on part if my house. I was stupid, he had befriended me through ny young son.
He gave a quote of 16 grand, I was to
go away for 7 weeks sohe asked for 13 grand before I keft.
To cut a long story short his work was absolutely abismal, and in some cases dangerous, he put in a gas boiler and isnt gas registered, he made structural changes that could result in the roof collapsing and every aspect of his work is substandard . I arranged a meeting between him and builders to
Point out the problems. He offered me £1,500 which I declined.
I stopped him working.I got four reports from builders and surveyors, all of them say the place isn't fit for purpose and because it is so bad needs pulling down and starting again.
I built a portfolio of it all with the reports and photos etc. But in the meantime he got his solicitor to write to
me saying I had broken the contract and he must be allowed to finish the job. I sent all my evidence to his solicitors but have had another letter saying its just snags ( despite most of the problems being behind plasterboards etc. ) And still saying he must be allowed to finish.
He admitted at a meeting with builders here in front of four witnesses that he wasn't a builder but a handyman and was in out of his depth......do I have to have him back to
Finish a job he obviously cant do? I'm struggling as he has had all my savings and I cant really afford a solicitor

You don't have to have him back.
If push comes to shove you could call his bluff- you could agree to have him back under supervision of an architect / surveyor to check his work and agree to split the cost of same.
Have you called the Health and Safety executive about the gas work?
This would possibly stop him in his tracks- you would have a good reason for not letting him back if the H&S found faults with the gas work he did.baldly going on...0
