All supplier have a standing charge,Its only the big 6 that separate the standing charge from the unit price.

It shouldn't cost to have the gas meter removed, But if you do have it removed, and not replaced within 12 months then the transporter can remove your gas supply.

Tell them you want to pay quarterly, then you won't get a monthly bill. There are no penalties to pay quarterly. Everyone pays the same. My summer gas bill was £4.04p. That was for cooking and heating the water when I wanted a bath.

You won't get a letter.
