Paying Invoice Issues

We had some electrics done (see any of my previous posts on it, odd service, weren't too happy etc) the problems have been mostly resolved now thankfully.

We agreed with the company that we would pay within 7 days of completion in order to get a 10% discount on the work. We had the cash ready for the work so that wasn't a problem.

Halfway through the job, we discovered we needed to pay cash for our removals company, so we emailed the electrical company asking if it was possible to pay the job half by cash and half by credit card - fulling assuming they'd say no. The boss of the company replied and said yes, that wouldn't be an issue. We have this in writing.

The job is finished, problems resolved, and we come to pay for the work - but there are only bank details on the invoice, so we pay the half by bank transfer as was planned, and phone them to make the remaining payment - at which point the boss says they actually can't take card so can we pay it all via bank transfer.

The extra money we had for the work has now been used for the removals company and cost of storage (nearly 1k) and various other bits for painting etc so we don't have the cash to send them. We wouldn't have used the cash we'd put aside if we didn't think they'd accept the card, that's why we checked.

They're now expecting us to balance transfer money from a credit card, which on a old, not interest free card would obviously cost us a FORTUNE. They've also said iff we can't pay them the balance by the 19th we lose the 10% discount.

What sort of leg do we have to stand on here? We definitely checked about paying by card otherwise we would have made the trip back to our old city to pay the removals company by credit card in person.

What can we say to them?! It's not like we have this much in savings to pay them either, it's around 2k to pay.

Can you try and pay them via Paypal?

If you tell them you haven't got the cash and forward them back their own email showing that you were open about to start with.

Their choice is to get paid or not.

We asked specifically if we could split the payment between cash and a credit card.

He replied with yes, splitting the payment is not a problem.

We've already spoken to them, and they've acknowledged that that's what they said in the email, but they have said that because we asked half way through the job then they assumed we'd still have the cash.

Our option is to wait until we get paid again and send them the cash then, or for them to figure out how to accept a credit card payment.

I hadn't thought of paypal - can you do that with a credit card?

You can add a credit card to a paypal account, so yes. You just need to make sure that you check the payment details properly when setting the actual payment up.

Paypal charges about 3.5% but the person paying can pay the fees upfront so the person receiving it doesn't have to pay. (still cheaper than a credit card cash advance though)

However as the contractor said he would accept a credit card payment he might be prepared to pay the fee.
  • You can either log in to your paypal and add a credit card (although it will take a couple of days to be verified) or you can pay without logging in (as a guest) if you have the payment details for the firm concerned and they have paypal as a payment option.
  • What I don't understand is do they have the ability to accept card payments or not? If they don't, why did they say yes in the first place? It makes no sense.
  • If you pay someone on PayPal & say it's friends & family there are no charges either way it's only the goods & services option that has a surcharge
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
