Time required for a change

I intend to change suppliers as a result of joining the cheap energy club. Our SSE fixed deal runs out on 26th Jan of next year. Assuming that a change may take longer than that date, can anyone tell me what happens in that interim period? Do SSE simply stop supplying?

Your supplier is required to notify you that your contract is about to end within the period 49 to 42 days BEFORE the 26th Jan. On receipt of this notification, you are free to initiate a switch without penalty. Provided your new supplier notifies the existing supplier before the end date of your contract with SSE, then SSE will keep you on your present tariff until the actual transfer goes through. Suppliers have 35 days from application to switch to transfer your supply: 17 day switching is only a voluntary code. Most suppliers will start the switch process immediately and your existing supplier will be told that you are leaving within a day or so. Some of the smaller suppliers, such as IRESA, do nothing for the first 14 days and they then start the transfer process. The new supplier manages all aspects of the switch: there is no need to tell SSE that you are leaving.
