Question on health/travel insurance

I was diagnosed with leukaemia when I was a kid. Do I need to disclose this when I get a travel insurance/health insurance? I was fully recovered almost 20 years ago – does that still count as a pre-existing medical condition?

It depends on the question asked. They usually ask specific questions about cancer.

If they ask if you ever had cancer it needs answering yes.
  • Maybe a bit late replying. But, I am guessing you will go on more than one holiday...

Yes, you are likely to be asked about ever having had cancer by every travel insurer.

BUT, each insurer should then go on to ask specific questions about your Leukaemia (sometimes this is done offline only). They should then determine the increased risk this fairly represents - IF ANY.

As you were cured and have no ongoing issues / needs - it may well be they take note of the condition declared, but do not charge any additional premium.

Many insurers use a common system to "screen" medical conditions and determine the risk they infer and then apply that factor to their underlying medical rates.

I just tried a quote online and that system did not seem to load my premium based on my answers about Leukaemia from more than 5 years ago - but this may depend on your answers.

    Good luck.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
