If you don't check in,in advance with Monarch do they charge you? The reason why I don't want to check in, in advance is because they are forcing me to pay extra for a seat, which seems unfair

you can check in 24 hours before the flight and be allocated a seat for free. It is only if you want to check in more than 24 hours in advance (up to 28 days) that you need to pay for a seat0

As above.
You can also check-in at the airport. There is no penalty or fee to do so and a free seat will be allocated.
The draw back is the later you check-in the fewer seats and choice of seats that remain.0 -
