Check your change @ Burger King Paddington train station

I had a blatant attempt by one of the staff at Burger King in Paddington train station at short changing me. This was no accident but purposely done.
After paying for my meal, the guy that served me seemed to take a little longer than normal at getting my change out of the till and I thought maybe because he was new to the job. Whilst he was doing this, I noticed a £1 coin on his side of the counter and thought it was odd that it was there (like it was put there because there was something wrong with it). The guy gave me my change and I stepped aside whilst checking it. It was £1 short. As I turned around and got his attention, he handed me £1 before I had a chance to tell him what was wrong! There was no questions and he didn't open the till to get my missing change. It was like he knew he was caught out. I also noticed that the £1 on the counter was now gone. If he's been doing this with other customers, the odd £1 here and there would have added up nicely throughout his shift. It got me annoyed that he tried it on with me and with hindsight, I should have brought it to the attention of the manager that he had a rogue member of staff amongst his midst.

I think this ^^^^ is better advice.0 -
and will probably blame & let go one of their staff if there is any investigation. It's common in low-paid, cash based businesses....I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.0

Same at our local corner shop - the elderly gentleman who owns it seems to take a perverse pleasure in short changing - 1p here, 5p there. Never large enough amounts to make a fuss about but last time he did it I just held my hand out - looked him in the eye and didn't say a word...He promptly gave me my 2p piece. I suspect he's been doing this for decades and has probably netted himself a pensions worth of small change :rotfl:0

Just the other day I was given a fake £1 coin with my change. I've missed seeing them before, but this one was so bad it really stood out! I immediately handed it back to the cashier, explaining that it was a forgery, but she wouldn't even look at it properly. I managed to pursuade her to give me 2 x 50ps instead - but then she put the dud coin back in the till. I told her that she would be committing an offence by giving out counterfeit money, and that the (worthless) coin should be disposed of, but she just looked at me as though I was stupid!0

wherever you shop.

Yes agree and is good advice, Pollycat but I thought because someone's did it deliberately rather than accidentally that it should be highlighted
Also, although possible, I doubt he was the manager as he looked too young (early towards mid 20s) and looked to me just like an employee.0 -
Yeah but this doesn't make sense to me. Why would he make it so obvious?
Why would he if he planned to take a £1 of your change for himself leave it in view as it were some strange collection? surely say if he had to give you £7 back he just give you £6 on the sly and tot it up as he goes along and take the amount he's gained when noone else is around. That's how it's normally done. I know simply due to myself having to sack people who I've caught doing this.
No one leaves the money in sight which is why I think in this case it wasn't an attempt to try and short change you.0 -

Yes, it's a rather strange way  and the technique you've described sounds a better way to do it. The £1 which I saw (which I thought was maybe a fake they spotted) wasn't on the very top part of the counter where they place the food when they give it to you so it wasn't obvious. It was only because I was looking in the right direction that I spotted it - in a place that's not so openly seen...
I know, I know pawlala, I was hungry and wanted something bad to indulge in - after all it's nearly Christmas0 -
