I declared the value of the goods (£50) and did not pay for additional insurance, as always, because it's a bloody rip-off.

    Cost of insurance £1.50
    Cost of no insurance £30

    Where's the rip-off?

I agree with the OP it is a rip off.

When you entrust a parcel into the care of a delivery service they have a duty of care and they if then lose it IMO they should reimburse you for your loss.

If you took a suit into the dry cleaners and they lost it would you not expect them to replace it? If you took your glasses into the opticians and they lost them would you not expect them to replace them?

    What is the difference?

Parcels don't go missing or lost - it's down to a PERSON stealing it not doing their job properly and not being found out! I cannot think of any way a parcel can get lost other than a label falling off. In an ideal world we shouldn't have the NEED to buy insurance as an added extra.

The cost of insurance is built in to the dry cleaning cost. Couriers could do the same, increasing costs accordingly. Is that preferable?

There are two options here, either:

    A) Add an optional charge for insurance
    B) Build it into the delivery charge

Either way you'll pay it, just one method gives you a choice. Which is better?

As a seller I pass on the cost of insurance to the buyer anyway, it's peace of mind for both parties.

I send a parcel worth £40 last week with parcel2go, they had £20 as standard compensation or to upgrade to the full cost if was an extra 40P (give or take a few pence) so hardly a rip off.

Bear in mind that insurance in general is designed to be a losing proposition for the client (in the long run)....

You bear the financial losses - because that's the risk you agreed to put on yourself when you refused to send the goods with a service not adequate for your needs.

Quite simply you can't have your cake and eat it too.

They will deal with stupid things like this day in day out so unlikely to cave in. Nor should they just because you paid for the wrong service.

As for it being stolen. Prove it or shut it is the short answer

"Parcels don't go missing or lost" - what utter rubbish. I presume you've never lost something that you own?!

Parcels can be delivered to the wrong address, either on their own or by being handed over in a larger pile of parcels.
