Pop-ups but not blockable -annoying...

The latest irritation is visiting a site for research etc and just as you're about to navigate a pop-up blocks your view which you have to get rid of to continue. Sometimes you click when navigating and a pop-up appears... I've got FF pop-up blocker and ABP but still they keep on coming...
They could be wanting you to subscribe, to join, to ask your opinion etc.
Does anyone else find these irritating?

You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Agree.
What I find more irritating is when you are reading a sensitive or distressing news story in an online newspaper when an ad suddenly appears in the middle of the text.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
Those pop-ups and adverts are paying for the website you're browsing.0

10/10 for stating the bl**ding obvious!
But there are ways of making the website user aware of the ads without being overly obtrusive. Ads in margins, at head of page, to side of text are fine.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

I have both, and still get them. Some companies pay for whitelisting (though that doesn't explain how some are getting past NoScript, I'll admit), Usually it's subscribe to the site or survey's about the site, which aren't ads per se. I can live with saying no once, but I've been on a few sites recently where a giant "Subscribe now" pop up has covered the entire article on every single page I've visited. Nothing makes me less interested!Mortgage

Yep, but if they prevent me from doing so then they're also not going to get paid for me seeing them - because I'll just stop trying to look at the site altogether! I have the whitelist enabled for my adblocker, so non intrusive ads can be displayed, and I do also manually whitelist some small sites that clearly don't have the resources to sort out being whitelisted. I wish there was a way for site owners to subscribe to a whitelisted ad service. I first got an adblocker when I was getting flash ads that would crash my computer. That really wasn't good advertising! Think that bug has been fixed, but they're still annoying.0
