Fan extract ducting goes into a condensate box

When investigating my shower extraction fan run of white flexi 4" ducting I found it finished in the storage space above the shower (the room has high ceilings) in something that looks like a condensation box-trap, about the size of a biscuit tin, the ducting entering it via a flange on the top.

The ducting and box-trap is located in a space created by an un-vented MDF enclosure inside the storage area. My Q is if this is an approved method or not, and what stops the trap filling up?

Many thanks, Will

No that's not acceptable, extractor fans need to vent to the outside of the building, otherwise the moisture can build up around the discharge, giving damp or mould problems.
  • Many thanks.

What's the point of the condensate box - it sounds as if it's un-usable?

I can email picture but not seem to be able to attach one.

Does the box have a drain coming out the bottom?
    Otherwise I can't imagine what it's doing.

    Lunacy!

Those condensate traps are used for tumble driers and are intended to be emptied frequently.
