And slippy? Did they have grooves in them?

Its not grooves, or the lack of, that make decks slip, It's the build up of
    moss/algae/etc
  • Thanks - yes I have been doing some more research and stumbled on the fact that the grooves on decking are designed to be on the underside to encourage airflow rather than the top.

    I never knew!

And yes you are right about a proper timber yard.

The gravel boards were sawn not planed.
    <500mm joist so no spring.

I still have them, very little rot, some were cupping and lifting the screws had gone, will be reused once cleaned up.

boards get slippery when not cleaned, grooves make little difference.
You can get non slip coatings but expensive.

probably your boards will be OK as decking for a while. but the risk maybe splitting with the moisture ranges(treat all over not just the top surface.

Wilko has some really cheap decking, wood and fence treatment stuff in their end of season sale(finished but at east 75%off)) so worth collecting stuff next year if going down the wood in the garden route.

(someone will pay for it if you make a bit of effort, next door got £200 for all his old concrete slabs on ebay)

I cannot imagine that you will have the slightest trouble getting rid of the old boarding for free. In fact you could probably get some money for it.
