Credit File Fraud cannot get any help

Hi All,

This is my last attempt at any advice or help as I have been trying to resolve my issue for over 4 months now.

When I was younger I got myself into a lot of debt which lasted many years. Finally, I took the plunge at 35 and sorted it all out which took me years on debt management living on practically nothing to get debt free.
The day I hit the goal and paid everything of was the most amazing feeling of my life. I continued building my credit score up and got to a healthy level.

In April someone fraudulently opened a BT account in my name, at a completely random address. I subscribe to my credit file and noticed this new entry on there.

I made over 40 phone calls to BT to try and get this resolved with the very limited information on my file. I also contacted Equifax who could not help either.

The only response I received at the end from BT was to fax my passport, driving license and proof of address to a fax number, which of course I did not feel comfortable with at all. I tried to fax the number to request someone to call me but never got a response.

In the last month BT have marked the account as defaulted on my credit file which had damaged all the years of hard work I have made fixing it.

I have even spoken to Action Fraud regarding it who said they would investigate but nothing.

I really need to get this of my credit file, how can I do this ?

Thank you for reading,
Dave.

Sorry to hear about your trouble after all you've achieved. I think the simplest thing to do is do what they have asked, i.e. fax your passport etc. Nothing can be done with a photocopied passport. Plus I have god knows how many copies of my passport floating about the world, from hotels, to after school club identification.

Plus you could always cover you passport number or any other irrelevant information that makes you nervous to share?

I would forget phoning as they try to fob you off. I would write as an official complaint to both BT and equifax, stating it is clear from your credit file you have never lived at the defaulted address and failure to remove the entry imediately will result in a complaint relating to both parties to the financial ombudsman, the FCA and the ICO.

If they still refuse they should at least give you a final written answer which you can then use to raise a complaint with the relevant authorities.

Also take note your credit score isn't what you were building but improving your credit history/worthiness. No 1 can see your credit score, it can be seen how your credit file is but the other 2 reference agencies will give you a different score.

As an alternate mode of attack I have found many complaints suddenly get sorted if you raise the complaint at the top, so perhaps drop a line or to gavin.e.patterson@bt.com who is listed as the chief exec of BT currently.

    Good Luck
